Strong relationships drive leadership success
“What’s love got to do, got to do with it
What’s love but a second hand emotion
What’s love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken”
Tina Turner sang that song in 1984. Today it rings true for anyone leading a team. A recent Harvard study suggested that associates perform better when they get a warm smile, a kind note, and a sympathetic ear from their leader consistently.
After looking into it there has been so much written about Positive Culture, Trust and Motivation as keys to driving your team’s performance. Curious I went and looked for myself.
I work with a team that runs the leadership development program for a fortune 200 company. We develop e emerging and new leaders. I took a cross section a few of our current alumni that recently were promoted from 4 of our business units and sure enough … the group that had the strongest relationships with their leaders were doing the best. More than that the elite of that group consistently connected with the associates through outside team events, charity and recognition programs.
What they do every day is what I want to write about … they CLIMB alongside their teams. That’s Challenge them daily with thought provoking questions, Listen to then with curiosity and empathy, Inspire them to reach for goals they did not know were possible, Motivate them by understanding their care abouts and what gets them up in the morning, and understand and support their career aspirations Believe no matter what that as long as they have the will to maintain their commitment and improve their competency they will achieve their goal for themselves and ultimately their teams.
All the research suggests leaders today who are struggling is because they are focusing on alternatives to command and control. vs. relationships. Effective leadership depends more on mutual influence than on unilateral control, and focusing on building relationships is one of the most powerful strategies a leader can employ.
What’s love got to with it? Everything when it comes to driving a team to extraordinary levels
What are you doing to drive the love on your team? How are you CLIMBING?
I’d love to know more…comment or reach out.
